Recycling is a phenomenon that has taken over the national consciousness in recent years. It wasn’t always that way. Perhaps one of the most forward thinking recycling initiatives has been that of industrial recycling practitioners in this area leading the way because of the sheer volume of materials that they extend and utilize, much of which is recyclable. Industry emerged from the waste situations of the early 1980s which focused on recycling computer parts. Every day offices move and close down, so in their wake, they would leave massive amounts of computer, cabling, printer and other equipment behind.
The pioneers of the recycling market saw this as an opportunity to reclaim some of the valuable metals that were being disposed of within this trash supply. From this early culture of scavengers emerged formalized efforts to straighten out how business is filled with disposing of equipment. The simple fact of the matter is that at one time it was far too cheap to throw away such massive amounts of garbage, so something like recycling the not make a lot of sense. When scavengers started to produce a true market, the industry started to change. Bradley Michael Becker was part of this early pioneer group and along with his father, they established was one of the dominant computer recycling businesses in all of Silicon Valley. They had multimillion dollar contracts that renewed yearly and they were very successful with this business for a number of years. Today, businesses are highly focused on doing the right thing in terms of ecological concerns, and they contract the most responsible companies to perform this recycling. If there is extraordinary value in a lot of equipment, that revenue is shared by contract with the supplier, adding a line of revenue for the originating company as well.
