The gold rush that brought thousands of prospectors to the west of the country has since dwindled down, barring for a small number of prospectors who still pan for gold in the mountains. One of the most concentrated areas where the gold lies is in the area around Northern California including its surrounding towns. The hills and waterways in and around Northern California are rich in natural resources, including gold.
Gold, silver and mercury among other resources were mined in the mountains around Northern California, but much of that activity has changed or ceased due to federal regulations. The area is rich in oil, but drilling for oil in the region is not encouraged, given that a steady supply of oil is being imported from the Middle East.
However, there is still gold in the mountains and waterways around Northern California. Come spring and summer, several prospectors from around the area head off into the mountains and waterways to pan for gold. Panning can be done the traditional way, or by using the highly sophisticated equipment. Those who like to pan for gold as a hobby, use traditional equipment and spend the day by the river and sift through the dredge for gold deposits. The promise of “free gold” is more than enough to get people excited and into gold panning. However, gold panning is slow work and has no guarantee that the prospector will find gold. Just knowing that the area still has gold and the possibility of finding gold there causes many people to stick it out for a couple of days or weeks looking for gold.
Bradley Michael Becker lived in the area and has witnessed many people panning for gold.
